Story Telling Workshop

Helen Lawry, a professional story teller and School and Family Programs Organiser for the National Trust South Australia will facilitate a combined workshop for adults and children on Saturday 30th April at the Clare Museum 10.00 am 3.00 pm.

  • BYO Picnic lunch, Tea and Coffee will be provided.

  • Bookings essential via the Secretary Pauline Reid on 0400 010 879 or to preid050@gmail.com as numbers will be capped.

  • The workshop is free of charge.

This workshop will provide those interested in entering the competition with some practical guidance on the art of telling a good story.

Following the workshop Museum volunteers will provide some historical background information on Clare and the Museum building.

  • There will be time for participants to explore the museum looking for inspiration.

  • The Museum is open on Saturday afternoons from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm and on Sundays from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm for repeat visits or by appointment.

Story telling competition – Information for entrants


This competition is being organised by the Clare Branch of the National Trust of South Australia and with the support of the Cultural Tourism sector of the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council.


Children and Adults are invited to write a

story of 1,500 Words or less [flash fiction]

(High School students 1000 words or less,

Primary School students 500 words or less)

based on something inspired by the Clare National Trust Museum in the old Police Station and Court House, Neagles Rock Road, Clare, S.A.


As an alternative to the written word, you might like to produce a short video or a recording that could be used as a Podcast.


Your entry could be a factual or fictional story about an early Clare immigrant, an object in the Museum, an activity such as the history of local sport, music, education, agriculture etc.


Entry to the competition is free of charge and entrants must be willing for the Clare Museum to utilise the story as appropriate.

“Clare A district’s history” by R J Noye – two copies of this book are available to peruse in the Museum but cannot be taken away. There is also a copy in the Clare Library. More copies can be bought from the Clare Regional History Group on Fridays 1-4 PM upstairs at the Clare Town Hall or from the Clare Tourism and Information Centre, Horrocks Highway (8 Spring Gully Rd, Clare SA 5453) $50
